Wessex Trec is helping to run the National Championships over the weekend of 14th to 16th September. Our input is to provide volunteers to help with the PTV element, which will be held on Sunday 16th September; Adrian Flyn is chef d’piste and will be designing the course but judges are needed for all the obstacles. Help is also needed with the setting up of the PTV course on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th September. This is an excellent chance to see top Trec in action and learn new skills to help with your own performance. Local judges training will be arranged in advance of the competition.

If you are able to help on any of these days, please contact Christine Harling at as soon as possible.

The competition is at Treborough Hill, Higher Court Farm, Treborough, Watchet, Somerset, TA23 0QW and full details can be found on the Trec GB website.

Wessex Trec Camp held in April 2018 at Bucklebury Equestrian was a great success, lots of fun doing MA, PTV and POR practices, talks, a horse agility demo, yoga and a quiz – all rounded off with yummy home made food and most importantly lots of fun and laughter! Thank you to all involved.

Wessex Trec Members Performed Well at Level 1 Championships

Wessex Trec members performed brilliantly at the recent Level 1 Championsips at Foxhill Equestrian near Daventry. Mel Bowers and Sharon Petchey won the pairs Intermediate and Niki King came 6th in the individual class. Our team “The Wanderers” (Niki, Sharon, Mel and AN Other) won the team competition.  So a very good result for Wessex altogether. Thanks also to Jayne Prestwich and Judith Morris who helped on both days.

Rosettes Kilometriques

Did you know you can gain a stunning rosette for your Wessex “POR miles”? You just have to enter your distances (kilometres!) on the form below and send it back to Niki once you have done 50, then 100 etc

Horse riders test their orienteering skills on the Ridgeway

In perfect riding weather, nineteen riders tested their map reading skills on 22nd April using the Ridgeway and the connecting rights of way between West Ilsley, Compton and Churn.  The event, starting from Bury Down car park and organized by Wessex Trec, covered 14 or 20 km to be ridden at 7 or 7.5 kph with riders collecting ‘tickets’ along the way to ensure the correct route was taken. All returned safe, well and happy with one rider pair completing within 3 minutes of the optimal time. One quote was ‘This was the most fantastic ride ever! We had such fun’.  Funds raised will go towards maintenance of the Ridgeway National Trail. Many pictures from the day can be found on the Wessex Trec Facebook page.

New Wessex Trec Rosettes

The first new Wessex Trec rosettes were handed out at the Wickstead Arena Trec Competition on 12th March 2017. The first person to receive one was the winner of the starter class Gwen Bailey and her lovely horse Zac

A TREC Oscar award for our Bibury Farm TREC!

rosetteGreat news to discover that Bibury Farm was one of the 4 finalists in the category “Best Summer POR” at the recent TREC Oscars. The winner of this category was Poplar Park, the 2016 National Championship course, so really gratifying for our one-day TREC to be a finalist in that company!

It wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of landowner Nick, TD team of Alison and Simon, all the volunteers who judged on the phase – and of course all the TREC GB members who voted for Bibury Farm – thankyou all!

Work has already started on planning the PORs and PTVs for our two 2017 summer TRECs; our Wessex Downs TREC will be on 3rd and 4th June (when we hope to be able to offer Ls 1, 2, 2A & 3) and our Cotswold TREC (Ls 1 & 2) on 8th and 9th July. Schedules will be out later in the Spring.
