Maps reading/POR training on Foot
We will meet at the car park grid reference 8551 0024 on the south side of Minchinhampton Common nest to Beaudesert School. At 10am or 2pm.
The route will be approx. 5 km, we will be looking at situations which can help with your map reading when on the POR including compass work. The rule of six will apply, so we will walk as a group and I’ll explain as we go. If you feel happy to go off on your own, or you want to bring the family I can give you the map to copy. We will have a map room table set up for practice. Bring your Trec pens and a compass. The area is on the side of a hill and it could be slippery in places, so walking boots would be advisable.
From the Stroud to Cirencester road A419, take the road for Rodborough or Minchinhampton Common. In the middle of the Common is a junction called Tom Long’s Post, turn off here and follow the road to Nailsworth. You will pass the turning to the Golf Club and Old Lodge Inn on your right. After 0.5km you will see a sign for Box on your left, turn right here to Beaudesert School. Large orange stones beside the road. The car park if just opposite the school.
From the A46, turn off in Nailsworth, past Morrison’s and up the windy hill. When the road starts to flatten out you will see a sign for Box on your right, turn left to Beaudesert School. If the car park is full, park on the side of the road.
